Project Description

The 5 Star Cassava Model Farm Project was initially conceptualised as a “COVID-19 Intervention Programme” to address potential food security challenges that might arise after the pandemic. The program strategically targeted states with a comparative advantage in cassava cultivation, considering factors such as land availability, rainfall patterns, and proximity to cassava processing factories. These states include Kogi, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, Cross Rivers, Ebonyi, Ogun, and Kebbi.

The project’s approved landholding of at least 100 hectares per location aimed to eliminate the logistical challenges associated with non-contiguous lands. The primary goal was to leverage the economics of scale inherent in community farming, employing precision mechanisation and input application to achieve increased tonnage and desired returns on investment.

The 5 Star Cassava Model Farm Project employed a comprehensive implementation strategy encompassing various stages of cultivation. NAMEL, as the appointed Mechanization Service Provider, played a crucial role in multiple facets of the project:

  1. Tillage Operations: NAMEL executed mechanised land preparation, ensuring the soil was adequately prepared for planting.
  2. Planting and Fertilizer Application: Precision mechanisation techniques were utilised for accurate planting and efficient fertiliser application.
  3. Weed Management: Mechanised strategies were employed to manage weeds effectively, promoting healthy cassava growth.
  4. Harvesting: The mechanised harvesting process improved efficiency and yield preservation.
  5. Produce Transportation: NAMEL was entrusted with transporting the harvested produce to the farmgate, ensuring a seamless transition from field to market.

The 5 Star Cassava Model Farm Project underscores our commitment to sustainable agricultural practices, innovative mechanisation, and community-based farming. By leveraging modern technology and precision approaches, we aim to enhance cassava cultivation, productivity, and economic viability in the selected states. This ongoing initiative is a testament to our dedication to transforming Nigeria’s agricultural landscape and empowering local communities.
